A new book from New Scientist aims to help people to understand their own race, class, and gender, and it’s being hailed as a step towards understanding race in a more complex way.
The book, Race in America, is based on research conducted by professor Steven Pinker and co-author Michael Rosenblatt, who argued that race was complex and nuanced.
In the US, for example, race is a fluid concept that can be influenced by circumstances and cultural differences.
There are also issues of how race is defined, and the ways in which we see and treat it.
The authors say the book will be a “game changer”, but that it’s also a useful resource for those who are already interested in the topic.
“It’s a good place to start,” says Prof Pinker.
The authors of Race in American, who include author Steven Pinkers PhD and coauthor Michael Raintree, also say the new book “provides a new and important tool for understanding race, including the complexities of race and its social context”. “
The more you know, the more likely you are to become a racist yourself.”
The authors of Race in American, who include author Steven Pinkers PhD and coauthor Michael Raintree, also say the new book “provides a new and important tool for understanding race, including the complexities of race and its social context”.
Prof Pinkers’ co-authors include Professor Michael Rosenbaum, who is a professor at the University of Michigan, and professor and cofounder of the Anti-Defamation League, Richard Berman.
Professor Rosenblatts’ research focuses on the “cultural impact of racism”.
He has written several books, including Understanding Racism: How Culture Transforms Our Racial Thinking and How to Stop It, and How Racism Works: How It’s Used to Create and Destroy Us.
Professor Raintrees research has focussed on how racism shapes the social world around us, particularly around race relations.
He was recently appointed a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has also received the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan Human Rights Award, the US Government’s Human Rights Fellowship and the National Council of Negro Women’s Achievement Award.
“We’re trying to create a more nuanced understanding of racism,” says Professor Rosenbaum.
The challenge is that the ways we talk about racism are still so fluid and still so heterogeneous. “
Racial issues are more complicated, nuanced, and interrelated than people think.
How race is structured in the US The authors argue that the way we talk and talk about race is “based on our own cultural assumptions and assumptions about race”. “
There’s a lot of diversity in race, but you can’t see it because we have to have a framework of how we define race to be able to talk about it.”
How race is structured in the US The authors argue that the way we talk and talk about race is “based on our own cultural assumptions and assumptions about race”.
For example, if we think of white Americans as being the best people to be white, it can lead to a negative attitude towards other races, or to the belief that there’s no difference between a white person and a black person.
“What we find is that people are just not aware of this kind of thinking,” says Dr Rosenblants.
How people think about race also affects how they see and act towards people of other races. “
If you have the right perspective on race, then you can talk about and understand racism without it being a negative experience.”
How people think about race also affects how they see and act towards people of other races.
“People of other racial groups are not viewed as ‘other’, they’re viewed as human,” says Michael Rosenbäts.
“They’re seen as individuals.”
Race in the USA, by Steven Pink, Michael Rosenbaums PhD, and Richard Berman, is published by Verso (£27.99).
